The common fletton facing brick is the industry workhorse.  It can be used internally and externally but can fit in anywhere because of its is plain appearance. It can be painted, rendered, used for patching in or refurbishment works. It was used  a lot of the general building after the war as an inexpensive multi-purpose brick. It is pinkie orange/red in colour and smooth textured.
